Starting this week, the Internal Revenue Service is sending letters to more than 9 million individuals and families who appear to qualify for a variety of key tax benefits but did not claim them by filing a 2021 federal income tax return.

The IRS has just issued  Notice 2022-36 which provides automatic relief for individual tax returns for 2019 and 2020. If a taxpayer qualifies for relief, the IRS will fully abate the penalties listed. And, if the taxpayer has already paid the penalties, the IRS will issue a refund.
